Reflections

Term 1 Reflections

This was a exciting and fun term for me. Our teacher, Mr Yap, thought us many things about the atomic structure in elements. We also learnt how to analyze the periodic table. For example, we learnt what an ionic compound and a covalent compound was. For example, an ionic bond is the result from the transfer of electrons from metal atoms to non-metal atoms forming positive and negative ions. While a covalent bond is formed by the sharing of a pair of electrons between 2 atoms. I love the experiments that we had conducted. How an acid reacts with other fluids to produce other products. I loved to see the end result of the experiment. I am indeed satisfied with the current Science curriculum. Especially the reaction between an acid and the metal, whereby a "pop" sound could be heard when we put a lighted splinter at the mouth of the test tube. However, I feel that I have not really done exceptionally well as I had expected. Although I achieved an A1, I was still below average in my class. Therefore, I will strive to do better in the next term.

Term 2 Reflections

This was yet another interesting term for me. Mr Yap, taught us more about acids and bases. For example, he taught us the reactions between them how we make use of acids and bases. This term was a much more stressful term as compared to term 1. This was because we had to struggle with 2 segments of science. Both physics and chemistry. However, chemistry was covered by Mr Yap. Soon after, he dislocated his arm! We were shocked to hear such news! Mr Yong took over the lesson and he taught us more about physics. Reflection of light, refraction of light, were covered in class. I was especially interested in physics, and was mesmerised by the science concepts and the experiments. This was when I developed an interest for physics and I made up my mind to take up physics in Secondary 3. Very soon, our test came. I had studied really hard for this test as I had not done well in Term 1. After getting back my test results, I was overjoyed. I had actually attained 37 marks!! My hard work has paid off eventually. Although I was not the highest in class, I was still satisfied since I had gotten a higher mark as compared to most of my classmates. However, Mr Yap told us he was leaving to help his wife run a business. We were reluctant to see him leave. However, he told us that a new teacher, Mr Tan would be teaching us biology next term.

Term 3 Reflections

I feel that this term was a rather relaxing one. We had a new teacher, Mr Tan, and he taught us mainly Biology. I must say he was a very patient and nice teacher, since he was able to tolerate with our nonsense. No offence, but he was better than Mr Yap. I feel that we had actually gone overboard to take advantage of the new teacher and actually made a fool of ourselves during his lesson. Although I had already told my classmates to keep quite, they simply refused to listen. This made it even harder for me to concentrate during his lessons. However, his lessons were very interesting and he was able to clear many of our doubts. He diligently marked our assignments. The experiments we conducted were also interesting. I remembered that we actually dissected a hibiscus plant to examine the reproductive system of the flower. We actually squished the flower till its nectar came out! Also, in this Science Test, I did well too. Our class had an average MSG of 1.2!! This actually showed that Mr Tan was a good teacher. In conclusion, I had learnt a lot this year, and explored all areas of Science. I have decided that I would take physics and chemistry next year. I really hope I get an exemption in the End of Year Examinations. However, I must still study hard and prepare in case I am not eligible for exemption.
